The Lesser-Known Benefits of Staying Hydrated

  • 19 Jun 2020

Every day, the human body loses up to 1.9 litres (approx. 64 ounces) of water through perspiration. This is something most of us overlook — unless you are working out, you do not really notice how much you are perspiring. Sweat is a vital part of temperature regulation, and we sweat through all activities, even deskbound ones like working on a computer. This is why it is important to keep a reusable water bottle or a small jug beside your workstation.

To make up for the water we lose to sweat, it is important to stay hydrated. The ideal water consumption varies per person, and nutritionists base it upon factors like levels of activity, age, mass, the climate of the place, and others. As a rule of thumb, though, men should have 3.7 litres (approx.125 ounces) of fluids a day, while women should get about 2.7 litres (approx. 90 ounces).

We all accept ‘stay hydrated’ as sound health advice, so much so that it has turned into an internet catchphrase. There are more benefits to it than just keeping us cool on a hot or humid day. Here are a few reasons why you should keep chugging this fluid.

It gives you a mental boost

1. It gives you a mental boost

Our brains are made of 73 per cent water, and dehydration takes a toll on neurological processes. It influences your cognitive skills, makes you less coordinated, affects your ability to retain information, makes you extra sensitive, and changes your mood.

When you are dehydrated, you run the risk of having a diminished performance of psychomotor tasks, memory skills, and tasks that require you to pay attention. So the next time you feel sluggish, do not reach for a cup of coffee; instead, go for a glass of water.

It removes toxins from the body

2. It removes toxins from the body

Water intake is essential in flushing out waste from the body. It prevents kidney stones and urinary tract infections. You can cleanse by simply being mindful of your water consumption; the body can naturally detoxify through the lungs, liver, and kidneys. You can also keep your heart healthy when you hydrate regularly; water improves the viscosity of blood and plasma.

It also helps your body break down food, prevents constipation, and keeps your digestive system healthy. It is also among the easiest ways to strengthen your immune system. Water carries oxygen to the cells, aside from eliminating toxins, and keeps your organs functioning well.

It prevents aches and pains

3. It prevents aches and pains

Headaches are among the first symptoms of dehydration. If you are fatigued and your temples are throbbing, a quick way to remedy it is by having some water. Dehydration can cause a reduction in brain mass—the loss of water causes it to pull away from the skull, which is what causes the headache.

Aside from helping the brain function better, water is also a natural lubricant for joints and muscles. What’s more, it forms most of the central nucleus of your vertebrae. If you hydrate properly, you are less likely to have sprained ankles, backaches, or muscle strain. When you work out, do not forget your insulated water bottle — it definitely helps keep injuries at bay!

Watching your water intake

Watching your water intake

Drinking water is one of those things that slip our minds. Plus, not many people know how much is enough. A good way to start is by having two cups or 500 ml (approx. 16 ounces) of water before every meal, and 250 ml (approx. 8 ounces) of water before bed. That works out to about two before meals and one before going to sleep. This ensures that you start and end your days right!

Conclusion

Staying hydrated has always been linked with keeping temperatures low and improving your complexion. There are more benefits to drinking water — from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, water helps your systems running the way they should.

For purer, healthier, and chemical-free water, use our Ecobud eco-friendly water filter jugs! We aim to meet your hydration needs while promoting a healthy environment.
